OneWeb and Hughes Announce Agreement to Bring Low Earth Orbit Satellite Broadband Service to India | national news

NEW DELHI and LONDON and GERMANTOWN, MD., January 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — OneWeb, the low Earth orbit satellite communications company, and Hughes Network Systems LLC (“Hughes”), an innovator in satellite and multi-transport technologies and networks for 50 years, today announced a six-year strategic channel partner agreement to provide Low Earth Orbit (LEO) connectivity services across India. The arrangement between OneWeb and Hughes Communications India Private Ltd. (HCIPL), a joint venture between Hughes and Bharti Airtel Limited (“Airtel”) follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the companies in September 2021.

As the leading satellite broadband provider in India, HCIPL is well positioned to provide enterprise and government services with OneWeb capability, especially in areas beyond the reach of fiber connectivity. OneWeb will connect cities, towns and local and regional municipalities in the most difficult to reach areas, playing a vital role in bridging the digital divide.

Partho Banerjee, President and CEO, HCIPL, said: “This announcement marks a turning point for Digital India. Businesses and governments, including telecommunications service providers, banks, factories, schools, defense organizations, national airlines and offshore vessel operators, eagerly await the arrival of new high-performance satellite communications. We look forward to bringing them high throughput, low latency services from HCIPL using OneWeb capability and catapult India at the forefront of connectivity.”

Neil Masterson, CEO of OneWeb, commented: “OneWeb is delighted to partner with Hughes to deliver low latency satellite broadband solutions and contribute to the vision of digital India. The OneWeb constellation will span the length and breadth of India, from Ladakh to Kanyakumari and from Gujarat to the North East and provide secure solutions to businesses, governments, telecom operators, airlines and maritime customers. OneWeb will invest in establishing enabling infrastructure such as gateways and points of presence in India to illuminate the services.”

Today’s agreement builds on an established relationship between the two companies. Hughes, through its parent company EchoStar, is a longtime and supportive shareholder of OneWeb. It is also an ecosystem partner of OneWeb, developing electronic gateways – including those in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu – and the core module that will power each user terminal in the system. Hughes is also the prime contractor for an agreement with the US Air Force Research Laboratory to integrate and demonstrate LEO SATCOM management using OneWeb capability in the Arctic region.

In each of its core markets, OneWeb works with carefully selected channel partners, providing new business and expansion opportunities while supporting its goal of bringing enhanced digital communications services to some of the hardest-to-reach regions. of the world.

OneWeb’s latest satellite launch on December 27, 2021 has increased its total satellites in orbit to 394, more than 60% of the planned LEO satellite fleet of 648. It plans to launch global service by the end of 2022 as demand continues from telecommunications providers, aviation and maritime markets, ISPs and governments around the world for its low latency and high throughput connectivity services.

Service offerings under this agreement are subject to all appropriate regulatory approvals and licenses.
