Half of enterprise technologists produce technology for users beyond their department: Gartner
BENGALURU : Half of enterprise technicians produce capabilities for users beyond their own department and / or business, according to a new survey from Gartner, Inc. They are primarily responsible for building analytics capabilities (36% ) but are also involved in the creation of digital commerce platforms, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation, among others.
Gartner defines business technologists as employees who report outside of IT departments and create technological or analytical capabilities for internal or external business use.
“Tech work, once primarily the responsibility of dedicated IT stores, is becoming more democratic,” said Raf Gelders, vice president of research at Gartner. “The best companies compete in the digital economy by harnessing the expertise and ingenuity of all their employees, and CIOs are working with other leaders in the C suite to do just that. “
Dramatic growth in opportunities for digitization as well as lower barriers to entry (e.g. low-code development tools and AI-assisted development) are among the key factors that enable the democratization of technological development beyond IT professionals. 77% of enterprise technicians regularly use a combination of automation, integration, application development or data science and AI tools in their daily work.
Compared to building tech or analytical capabilities independently, four in five respondents said they found value in collaborating with IT, rather than trying to bypass it, citing increased innovation, security and speed. Additionally, 76% of corporate technologists take ownership of business risks or believe it is their responsibility to ensure their work is secure, meets regulatory requirements, and has no impact. negative on others.
Gartner analysis shows that organizations that successfully implement business technologists are 2.6 times more likely to accelerate digital business results.
“Enterprise technologists extend the strategic reach of CIO as IT equips and empowers employees across the enterprise to develop digital capabilities to earn or save money,” said Gelders. “Concentrating recruiting efforts and investments to take full advantage of this resource base provides CIOs with an opportunity to work with other business leaders.”
